First determine the seal’s function in the system

Each sealing element in a hydraulic cylinder has a different function. A rod seal provides sealing along the moving rod, while a piston seal limits fluid transfer between the two working chambers. A wiper seal helps protect against contaminants from the external environment, and guiding elements help limit direct contact between metal surfaces.

Therefore, two products with the same dimensions may not be direct alternatives when their profile design or function is different.

Information to evaluate during selection

  1. Product function: Piston sealing, rod sealing, wiping, static sealing or guiding.
  2. Installation dimensions: Rod diameter, housing diameter, groove width and any other available groove dimensions.
  3. Motion and pressure direction: Single-acting or double-acting operation and the surface on which motion occurs.
  4. Operating environment: Fluid type, external contamination, operating frequency and system position.
  5. Surface and installation: Condition of the dynamic surface, groove geometry, installation access and sharp edges.
  6. Material: Suitability should be evaluated using the available verified product and material data.

Points to consider

Selection should not be based only on the product’s appearance or the deformed dimensions of a used sample. Groove dimensions and operating conditions should be verified together whenever possible.
  • Provide the complete product code if it is known.
  • Share clear photographs of the sample from different angles.
  • State the rod, housing and groove dimensions separately.
  • Clearly note when the fluid or operating conditions are unknown.
  • If a standard product is not sufficient, request a Smart Seal technical evaluation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a hydraulic seal be selected by size alone?

No. In addition to size, the seal function, type of motion, pressure direction, fluid, surface and operating environment must also be evaluated.

Is a used seal sample sufficient for selection?

A sample is an important starting point, but a used product may be deformed. Groove and dynamic surface dimensions should also be measured whenever possible.

What should I provide if I do not know the product code?

You can provide any available dimensions, sample, photographs, technical drawing and known operating conditions.
